We get it. Tokyo Disneyland has cutest merch, and Japan is home to the world’s only Disney Sea. Universal Studios Japan just unveiled its Donkey Kong expansion, and for many travelers, these parks are the closest Disney or Universal destination.
But Japan offers so much more for families beyond its most famous parks. From hands-on learning spots to playful nature escapes, there are endless ways to explore, discover, and have fun together. Below are some ideas.
Oita (Kyushu)
African Safari is one of Japan’s largest safari parks, home to around 1,400 animals across 70 species, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, and rhinos. Spanning 115 hectares of highland terrain, the park offers a chance to see these animals roaming freely, from the safety of a vehicle. Visitors can explore by car or hop on one of the park’s animal-themed buses for a closer look. It is located in Oita, home to Beppu where hot springs are the most famous.
Awaji Island (Kansai)
Home to Hello Kitty Apple Land and Nijigen no Mori’s anime-themed attractions, Awaji Island also offers unique wildlife experiences. Families can go horseback riding or visit the monkey park, where wild Awaji macaques (known for being friendlier than other Japanese macaques) roam freely in their natural habitat. Just under an hour from Kobe, Awaji Island is a great spot for a relaxed family getaway. It is great for playful adventures with a slower pace of travel.
Mie (Kansai)
Just an hour or two from Osaka, Mie offers an immersive ninja experience in Iga. Visit the relocated Iga Ninja Mansion in Ueno Park, an unassuming farmhouse hiding clever defensive mechanisms inside and then watch an action packed ninja show. Or those preferring more action can step into the role with outdoor training next to rivers and nature in the Akame area Ninja Training Village. Dressed in a ninja costume, try scaling walls, balancing on ropes, and mastering stealthy movements. For a hands-on creative experience, Kiond in VISON offers interactive fun for all ages, with an indoor play area, outdoor activities, and woodworking workshops.
