Places in Japan I Actually Took My Family

Traveling in Japan with older family members, like my grandparents with not-so-strong knees calls for a gentler pace. Forget endless train rides and rushing through crowded streets. We chose slower travel and peaceful day trips to places where everyone could relax and soak in the culture without stress. Here are a few spots that they loved.

Kanazawa, Ishikawa
This compact city was our three-day home base. Filled with rich culture from geisha districts and tea ceremonies to samurai history and stunning Japanese gardens, Kanazawa has everything a traveler could want. Plus, it’s quieter than Kyoto. It is perfect for those who appreciate calm alongside culture. The fresh seafood didn’t hurt either!

Bikan Historical District, Okayama
Just a short day trip from our stay, this merchant town offers a glimpse into traditional craftsmanship, especially mingei folk art and denim production. Strolling through its charming streets, we enjoyed browsing unique shops and cozy cafes.  It is all set against a backdrop of well-preserved architecture.

Uji, Kyoto
Known for its rich tea culture, Uji offered a calm retreat away from busy city life. The family appreciated strolling through historic tea shops and riverside paths, savoring delicate matcha treats and soaking in the serene atmosphere. It was an easy-paced day that balanced gentle exploration with plenty of rest.

Shirahama, Wakayama
Visiting Shirahama at the end of September was perfect timing. It was the perfect escape just 2.5 hours outside of Osaka, and great for a weekend trip. Shirahama is a resort town known for its seafood and hot springs. In September, the summer heat lingered, but the crowds had vanished as school was back in session. This meant the pristine white sand beach was practically all ours. The family loved the relaxed atmosphere, spending their days unwinding by the sea and enjoying a casual BBQ at the nearby Tore Tore Market. Fresh local seafood and easy-going vibes made it a simple yet memorable experience.

Suminoe Taisha Shrine in Osaka
In Osaka, Suminoe Taisha stood out as a peaceful, lesser-known shrine where the family could enjoy a quiet cultural experience without the crowds. The spacious grounds and beautiful architecture provided a gentle walk and a chance to connect with local tradition. It was an ideal stop that blended culture with calm.

Local Supermarket
Unexpectedly, they really enjoyed shopping at local supermarkets and cooking their own meals. Going to a supermarket felt like a trip to Disneyland for them. They were always curious about each ingredient and excited to try something new. By the end of the trip, they brought home lots of curry packets as souvenirs—definitely a fun and tasty discovery for the whole family!

Traveling with family, especially with older members, doesn’t have to be about rushing from place to place. Sometimes, the simple moments like discovering new flavors together or enjoying a quiet day at the beach can create the most lasting memories. It’s these unexpected joys that make every trip truly special.
