説明

About this program

Kyoto served as Japan's capital for 1200 years and is home to numerous antique shops offering a wide variety of ancient artworks. While famous landmarks like Yasaka Shrine and Heian Jingu Shrine attract crowds of tourists, the nearby antique district in the Gion area remains a hidden gem. Despite hosting over 50 shops, its existence is known only to a handful of Kyoto enthusiasts and serious collectors.

Many people visit museums, yet few realize that many of the masterpieces on display are actually sourced from antique dealers. Furthermore, antique shops are not just places for commerce; they are venues where one can learn about the history and intrinsic charm of each piece.

This project aims to introduce this "well-kept secret" of Kyoto’s antique district. Participants will learn about shop etiquette, how to find pieces that resonate with them personally, and the proper manners for making a purchase. By visiting these shops—which serve as "museums where you can actually touch the art"—you will be able to enjoy window shopping and purchasing high-quality antiques with confidence and ease.
